This deeply purple wine is extremely aromatic, with large amounts of black raspberry, crushed violet spice, and cocoa nibs as well as underlying vanilla cedar spice. The palette is rich with ripe cassis and tobacco spice, as well as a dusty black earth character. The tannins are firm and chalky with crisp mountain acidity to balance. More raspberry and fennel linger on the long finish. The wine is very young still and could be consumed so with hearty food, or left to develop beautifully over the next 9-12 years.

Wine EnthusiastNearly 100% pure Cabernet, with a dash of Cab Franc and Petit Verdot, this is marked by the hard tannins that characterize most Spring Mountain Cabs. That gives it a toughly astringent mouthfeel, and leads to the question of cellaring. The currant and cola flavors, while good, are a little lean, and may not ride out the aging process, but it's a delicious, upscale wine that's rewarding now and for a good six years.

Wine SpectatorA rustic, chewy style, with loamy, dusty earth and rich, extracted dark berry, graphite, cedar and dill flavors. At once complex and nuanced, this is also stubbornly tannic. Will last, but shows signs of drying out.-2005 California Cabernet blind retrospective (September 2015). Drink now. 2,050 cases made.
